Best Fishing Landing Nets (2025): Rubber Mesh, Folding, and Kayak Nets Reviewed

November 22, 20258 min read
Quick verdict: The EGO S2 Slider is the best all-around fishing net โ€” telescoping handle, rubber mesh for fish protection, and a large hoop that handles bass, trout, and most freshwater species.

A good landing net has three jobs: land the fish without losing it, minimize harm to the fish if you're releasing it, and not get in the way when you don't need it. Most cheap nets fail at all three โ€” the metal nylon mesh damages fish slime coats and gills, the fixed handles are either too short or take up too much space, and they tangle in everything aboard. Rubber mesh nets are the standard for any catch-and-release fishing, and the options in the $30โ€“$80 range are genuinely good.

EGO S2 Slider

Best all-around
Approx. $55โ€“$75
Pros
โœ“Telescoping handle extends from 24" to 48" โ€” ideal for kayaks and boats
โœ“Rubber mesh coating protects fish slime coat and reduces hook tangles
โœ“Magnetic connection allows one-hand deployment
โœ“Large 20"ร—17" hoop handles bass, large trout, and most freshwater species
Cons
โœ—Heavier than folding nets at the same price
โœ—Telescoping mechanism requires occasional maintenance

The EGO S2 is the best all-purpose freshwater net we've found under $80. The telescoping handle solves the storage problem that makes full-size nets impractical on kayaks and small boats โ€” collapsed it's manageable, extended it gives the reach you need to land a fish at arm's length. Rubber mesh keeps hooks from tangling and doesn't strip slime coat. Buy this if you need one net for everything.

Frabill Power Stow

Best folding net for kayaks
Approx. $45โ€“$60
Pros
โœ“Folds flat for deck storage without clips or attachments
โœ“Rubber coated mesh protects fish
โœ“Strong aluminum frame handles larger fish
โœ“Multiple hoop sizes available
Cons
โœ—Folding mechanism adds a fold/unfold step during landing
โœ—Less rigid than fixed-handle nets when fighting a large fish

The Power Stow is designed specifically for the kayak angler who needs a net that stores flat on the deck without protruding into casting zones. The folding mechanism deploys reliably when you need it and lies flat when you don't. The rubber mesh is CT catch-and-release friendly. For kayak bass and trout fishing, this is the practical choice.

Ranger Nets TK-240-BLK

Best budget rubber mesh net
Approx. $30โ€“$40
Pros
โœ“True rubber coated mesh at a budget price
โœ“Lightweight aluminum handle
โœ“Solid construction for the price
โœ“Good size for trout and smaller bass
Cons
โœ—Handle is fixed length โ€” not ideal for kayaks
โœ—Smaller hoop than premium nets (17"ร—15")

For trout stream fishing and smaller freshwater applications, the Ranger Nets TK-240 gives you rubber mesh protection for fish at a price that doesn't require justification. Fixed handle and smaller hoop make it less versatile than the EGO S2, but if you're primarily stream fishing for trout and don't need the telescoping feature, this covers the bases without overspending.

Buying Guide

**Rubber mesh vs. nylon mesh:** Rubber or rubber-coated mesh is the standard for any catch-and-release fishing. Traditional knotted nylon mesh strips the protective slime coat from fish, damages fins, and causes abrasions โ€” all of which impair survival after release. Rubber mesh is gentler, hooks tangle less, and the extra cost is minimal. There's no good reason to buy a nylon mesh net for catch-and-release fishing.

**Hoop size:** Match hoop size to the largest fish you expect to land. A 16"ร—14" hoop handles most trout and bass under 3 lbs. A 20"ร—18" handles larger bass, pike, and salmon-class fish. When in doubt, size up โ€” a fish that won't fit in your net on the first pass is exhausted and at risk.

**Handle length:** A short (24") handle works for boat fishing where the fish is alongside. A longer handle (36"โ€“48") reaches further when fishing from a kayak or bank where the fish is further from you. Telescoping handles provide flexibility.

**Magnetic release clips:** Several nets include a magnetic clip that attaches the net to your PFD or vest and releases with a pull. Convenient for wading anglers who need both hands for the rod and reel.
