Southern California marlin and yellowtail bite stays strong into fall

Western Outdoor News — Saltwater reports the marlin bite is the best in years across the SoCal Bight, with fish showing up in U.S. waters including the Northern Channel Islands. The same publication says a Point Loma half-day boat crew trip crushed yellowtail before finishing on white seabass, and a Sea Adventure 80 two-day charter out of Point Loma came home with around 100 yellowfin and other exotics in good weather. Closer to the beach, a kayak angler reported a tuna right outside Newport Harbor, with talk of El Niño and plenty of bonito around. Our NOAA CO-OPS readings show water at 74.5°F at station 9410170 and 72.7°F at station 9410230, which is warm for mid-October and fits that warm-water picture.

What's next

Warm water is the story for the next few days. With both CO-OPS stations reading above 72°F, expect the warm-water pelagic activity described by Western Outdoor News — Saltwater to hold, and yellowtail remain a realistic target for boats working out of Point Loma. Halibut anglers working the shallows should keep fishing the usual sandy-bottom areas, though no source this week gave a specific halibut update, so treat that as general seasonal knowledge.

Tide timing for today: station 9410170 shows a predicted low at 05:26 UTC and the next high at 14:17 UTC, which is roughly 7:17 AM Pacific. Station 9410230 is nearly identical, with the high at 14:16 UTC. That puts a morning high around sunrise, and moving water around that window is typically the best period to be on the bite. With the moon at First Quarter, tide swings are moderate, so you get steady flow without the extremes of a new or full moon.

Per Surf Fishing in So Cal, king tides are coming up through 2026 and 2027, and the site breaks down what they mean for surf anglers. Those are worth reading before planning beach sessions around the highest tides, since they can change where the troughs and holes sit along the shoreline. The same site also has a primer on reading the beach for structure such as troughs and rip currents, which helps on any stretch of sand. Weekend boat traffic will likely be heavy given how good the marlin and yellowfin news has been, so book space early if you plan to fish a sportboat.

Context

Mid-October is normally a transition period for the LA Bight and Channel Islands. Summer warm-water species are still around when the water stays warm, while cooler-season inshore fishing begins to build. This year looks on the warm and late side of that pattern, with water in the low-to-mid 70s and marlin and yellowfin still being reported this deep into fall. Warm years tied to El Niño talk tend to keep southern visitors lingering longer than usual, which is the angle Western Outdoor News — Saltwater highlights with the bonito and tuna near Newport. Expect that window to narrow once the first sustained cool snaps and bigger swells arrive in late fall. Regulations and seasons vary by species, so check state regs before harvesting.
