Albie Fever Takes Over Long Island Sound Ahead of Full Moon Tides

Long Island Sound's water temperatures are holding steady in the high 60s, reading 67.3°F, 67.8°F and 68.2°F across our three CO-OPS stations, and the fall run is showing it. Per The Fisherman — Connecticut, J&B Tackle reports albies are everywhere from Black Point to Fishers Island, with striped bass feeding heavily on bait but not yet blitzing and bluefish from snappers to gators very active. AW Marina says albie fever has customers flying through epoxy jigs and tins. Bottom fishing stays strong too — the Tartan II is finding fantastic sea bass, though the Black Hawk's final fluke trip of the season came in soft.

What's next

Tonight's full moon pushes a stronger tide: CO-OPS station 8461490 shows a high near 8:44 PM and the next low around 3:03 AM, the kind of spring-tide swing that stacks current over structure and tends to trigger feeding windows. With Sound temps holding rather than dropping, conditions favor the striped bass finally turning from feeding to blitzing, which J&B Tackle notes hasn't happened yet despite heavy bait presence.

Albies should keep working the string of spots already producing — Avery Point, Sarah's Ledge, Ocean Beach, Harkness, Seaside, Niantic Bay and Black Point, per J&B Tackle — as long as the mild water holds. AW Marina is already stocking crabs ahead of the tautog opener, so anglers switching gears toward tog season should have rigs ready. Plan around the moon-driven tide swings this weekend for the best current windows.

Context

Late September is peak fall-run timing for Long Island Sound, when false albacore and bluefish typically move through ahead of striped bass staging for their coastal migration south. High-60s water is normal for this point in the season and hasn't yet delivered the sharper cooldown that usually flips the striper bite into high gear. Fluke fishing tapering off as the season closes out is consistent with bottom species giving way to the fall migratory push.
