Fall snook push takes hold across Tampa Bay and Sarasota

Water temps are holding warm at 82-83°F across the bay (NOAA CO-OPS stations 8726520 and 8726724), and that warmth has snook fired up right as the fall run gets going. Capt. Brandon Naeve of CB's Saltwater Outfitters (Sarasota) says snook season "is here," with the overall warm water keeping fish most active since the Gulf Coast fall run opened September 1st, from Sarasota south to Fort Myers. In Sarasota Bay, Capt. Kelly Kurtz reports an active inshore bite for snook and redfish, landing a nice redfish this past week on a trip out of CB's. Capt. Rick Grassett's October forecast calls for a good month on snook as they move off the passes and along the beach toward inside waters, staging around docks and bridges in the ICW and on shallow flats. Grassett points live-bait anglers toward live shrimp around docks and bridges, pilchards in shallow water, and smaller lures and flies as the fish settle into their wintertime holding areas.

What's next

Tonight's new moon means stronger tidal push over the next few days. Station 8726520 shows low tide near 9:14 AM with high around 2:05 AM, while 8726724 (Clearwater Beach) runs low near 6:39 AM and high around 1:02 PM, so the bay's two ends are working on different clocks this week. That morning low-to-high transition is worth building a trip around, since moving water around docks, bridges, and pass structure is exactly where Grassett and Kurtz are finding fish right now.

If the pattern Grassett describes holds, expect more snook to keep sliding off the beach and passes into ICW docks and bridges as October progresses, with shallow grass flats picking up as a secondary target. The redfish bite Kurtz is seeing in Sarasota Bay should stay steady through the week on live bait around the same structure. Weekend anglers chasing snook should focus early mornings and the hour around the tide change, when CB's reports the warm water keeps fish most willing to feed.

Context

This is peak timing for Gulf Coast snook. The fall run typically builds through September and October as fish leave the beaches and passes for sheltered inside water ahead of winter, and this week's captain reports put Tampa Bay and Sarasota right on that seasonal schedule. Water in the low 80s is still warm enough to keep fish active rather than pushing them deep. Tarpon, by contrast, are past their peak migratory window for this region; adult fish typically thin out from the coastal Gulf in early fall and shift to resting in inside waters, around bridges and deep grass flats, before moving on, which is consistent with what's typical for Tampa Bay and Sarasota this time of year.
