Snook and redfish bite holds strong in Sarasota Bay

Water temperatures are still riding summer highs across Tampa Bay and Sarasota, reading 87.6°F at St. Petersburg and 85.6°F at Clearwater Beach per NOAA CO-OPS stations 8726520 and 8726724. Snook are the story of the week. Capt. Rick Grassett of CB's Saltwater Outfitters in Sarasota reports snook fishing has been good through September, with fish still holding in the surf along the coastal Gulf and staging around docks and bridges in the ICW close to passes. Capt. Kelly Kurtz, fishing out of CB's on Siesta Key, is finding an active inshore bite in Sarasota Bay for snook, redfish, and spotted seatrout. Capt. Chuck Cress put that redfish bite on display this week too, hooking into several reds immediately on a rising morning tide using a popping cork with live shrimp, and releasing a few small snook on the same rig.

What's next

Expect the pattern to hold into the weekend. Both CO-OPS stations show water moving toward afternoon lows — Clearwater Beach bottoms out around 3:01 PM and St. Petersburg around 5:34 PM local — so an outgoing-tide session timed around docks, bridges, and pass mouths lines up with where Grassett says snook are stacking. Live shrimp and pilchards fished shallow, or DOA's Baitbuster, Shrimp, and TerrorEyz lures, remain the go-to presentations per CB's Saltwater Outfitters. With the moon at First Quarter, tidal swings are moderate rather than extreme, which should keep the bite steady through the coming days rather than concentrated into one short window. Redfish and spotted seatrout should keep showing on popping-cork rigs worked over shallow flats and around docks in Sarasota Bay, the same pattern Kurtz and Cress both described this week. Grassett's outlook into October has snook beginning to shift off the passes toward docks, bridges, and shallow flats as they stage for their move to wintertime areas, so anglers fishing the back bays and ICW should start seeing more consistent action as the month turns over. For the fly crowd, CB's Saltwater Outfitters has an Orvis-endorsed casting school scheduled in Sarasota on Oct. 24.

Context

Late September sits at the tail end of the Gulf coast's warm-season snook pattern, with water still in the mid-to-upper 80s typical for this point in the year. Inshore species like redfish and spotted seatrout are typically most active in Tampa Bay and Sarasota Bay through early fall before cooler water pushes fish deeper. This week's reports track on schedule for the season, with snook still holding close to passes and structure rather than having made their move toward wintering grounds, a transition usually more pronounced once water temperatures fall into the 70s in October and November.
