Snook and redfish turn on as Sarasota inshore heats up

Water temperatures are holding in the mid-to-upper 80s across the Tampa Bay-area tide stations, 87°F near the bay entrance and 85°F off Clearwater Beach, and the inshore bite in Sarasota Bay is active. Capt. Kelly Kurtz of CB's Saltwater Outfitters reports anglers finding snook, redfish, and spotted seatrout together on the same trips right now, working docks and bridges in Sarasota Bay. Capt. Chuck Cress, fishing out of the same shop, described hooking into several redfish on a rising morning tide using a popping cork with live shrimp, with smaller snook mixed in on the same outing. Capt. Rick Grassett's September forecast, also from CB's Saltwater Outfitters, calls snook fishing good this month, with fish still holding around passes and in the surf before the seasonal move inland begins.

What's next

Grassett's outlook for October has snook already starting that move, sliding away from the passes and along the beach toward inside waters as they head for wintertime holding areas. Expect fish staging around docks and bridges in the Intracoastal Waterway and settling onto shallow grass flats through the next few weeks, with live shrimp near structure and pilchards on the flats the recommended baits, and smaller lures or flies worth a look as water starts to cool.

Falling tides are worth planning around this week. Outgoing water concentrates bait and gamefish near structure and passes, per Sport Fishing Mag, and today's Tampa Bay-area stations both show low water arriving in the afternoon, near 1:59 PM off Clearwater Beach and 4:24 PM near the bay entrance. With the moon at First Quarter, tidal swings are moderate rather than extreme, so those afternoon low-tide windows should be steadier bets than a big moon-driven push. Redfish should keep responding to popping-cork shrimp presentations on the rising water that follows, based on Cress's report this week.

Florida Sea Grant also flagged a rare rust tide algal detection in Charlotte Harbor, south of Sarasota, this week. It isn't red tide, but it's a water-quality signal worth watching if conditions shift north toward Sarasota-area passes.

Context

This lines up with the normal late-summer-to-fall transition for Southwest Florida's inshore fishery. Snook typically stage around passes and the surf through summer before easing into backwater and ICW habitat as days shorten and water cools, and redfish and spotted seatrout activity on shallow flats and around docks tends to build through this window. Mid-to-upper-80s water is still warm for the season, consistent with a normal-to-slightly-late pace for that shift rather than an early cool-down. Snook harvest seasons vary by Florida coast and change through the year, so anglers should check current state regulations and slot limits before keeping any fish.
