Snook Fishing Turns On as Fall Season Kicks Off in Sarasota Bay

Water temperatures remain in the upper 80s across Tampa Bay and Sarasota, with NOAA CO-OPS station 8726520 reading 87.1°F and station 8726724 at 86.2°F, and the snook bite is turning on to match. Capt. Kelly Kurtz of CB's Saltwater Outfitters reports an active inshore bite in Sarasota Bay for snook, redfish and other species this past week. Capt. Brandon Naeve, also with CB's, notes the Gulf Coast's fall snook season opened September 1 and that the warm water has fish especially active right now. Capt. Rick Grassett's forecast for CB's adds that snook are staging around docks and bridges in the Intracoastal as they move along the beach ahead of their winter push.

What's next

Tide timing favors early starts over the next few days. NOAA CO-OPS station 8726520 shows a high near 2 a.m. sliding to a low by roughly 7 a.m., while station 8726724 turns from a late-evening high near 11 p.m. to a low around 4:40 a.m. That overnight-to-sunrise falling tide should concentrate bait around passes, docks and bridge pilings, a good window for snook and redfish working structure on the moving water.

Looking toward October, Grassett's monthly outlook for CB's Saltwater Outfitters calls for the snook bite to stay strong as fish shift away from the passes and inside waters, staging on docks, bridges and shallow flats on their way toward wintering grounds. Live shrimp fished around structure, along with smaller lures and flies, should keep producing through the transition. The same outlook has migratory tarpon continuing to thin out of the coastal Gulf as they push into inside waters and rest around bridges and deep grass flats before moving on, a shrinking but still catchable structure bite worth checking through early fall. With the moon waxing toward full, expect stronger tide swings into the weekend that should sharpen the bite windows around the peaks.

Context

Late September sits at the seasonal handoff for Tampa Bay and Sarasota: summer's peak heat is easing, the fall snook season just reopened after its typical closure, and fish are beginning their shift from open beach and pass structure toward the docks, bridges and inside waters they'll hold in through winter. Tarpon moving off the coastal flats into rest areas before migrating out is a normal marker of this transition rather than an early or late shift. Confirm current snook season dates and slot limits with state regulations before harvesting.
