Snook lock into fall pattern as Sarasota Bay bite heats up

Water temps are holding right around 82 to 83°F across Tampa Bay and Sarasota per NOAA CO-OPS stations 8726520 and 8726724, and that warmth is keeping snook locked into an active fall pattern. Capt. Brandon Naeve at CB's Saltwater Outfitters says the fall snook season "is here," pointing to the warm water as the driver behind an aggressive bite running from Sarasota south toward Fort Myers. Capt. Kelly Kurtz, fishing Sarasota Bay out of CB's this past week, reports an active inshore bite that includes snook and redfish, landing a solid redfish on a recent trip. Per Capt. Rick Grassett's October forecast, snook are moving off the passes and staging around docks and bridges in the ICW, with live shrimp and pilchards producing around structure and smaller lures and flies working the shallow flats.

What's next

Expect the snook bite to keep building as water stays in the low 80s. Grassett's outlook has fish continuing to shift away from the passes and into the ICW and shallow grass flats through the rest of October, which should keep the shrimp-and-pilchard pattern around docks and bridges productive into the weekend. The New Moon should push stronger-than-usual tidal flow through the bay's passes and residencies, a window worth timing a trip around for both snook staying tight to structure and the redfish activity Kurtz is seeing in Sarasota Bay.

Tarpon, by contrast, are on their way out. Grassett's late-season notes have adult fish thinning out of the coastal Gulf and sliding into inside waters near bridges and deep grass flats ahead of their fall migration, so any remaining shots at them will come on the inside rather than open Gulf water.

Context

This is right on schedule for Tampa Bay and Sarasota in October. Snook consistently settle into their cool-season pattern this time of year, sliding off summer haunts near the passes and into the ICW, dock, and bridge structure they'll hold through winter. Redfish typically round out the inshore mixed bag through fall as bait funnels into the bay, which lines up with what CB's Saltwater Outfitters is reporting right now. Tarpon are the one species working against the calendar: Tampa Bay and Sarasota's migratory fish typically clear out of open Gulf water by early fall, so an October tarpon bite is a late, inside-water opportunity rather than the main event. Anglers should check current Florida snook season regulations before harvesting, since recreational dates and limits can shift year to year.
