Bass and bluefish hold along Cape Cod beaches as the fall run builds

Water is holding at 62°F on buoy 44020 and at CO-OPS station 8449130, and striped bass remain the core of the bite. Sports Port says bass are back in the Monomoy rips, while Falmouth Bait and Tackle reports schoolies along the Falmouth shore and bluefish and bones from Hyannis to Woods Hole.

What's next

Buoy 44020 is showing about 22 mph of wind and 2 ft seas, so expect a choppy bay through the morning and look for the calmer side of the wind.

Tides are the timing tool this week. The predicted high at station 8449130 is 9:18 AM EDT and the low is 2:47 PM EDT, so the falling tide through late morning and into the afternoon low is the window to plan around. Black Rose Fishing Charters, running out of Bass River, reports a mixed bag of tautog and stripers with blues, albies and bonito mixed in, which is the clearest guide to what boats are finding right now.

Watch the water temperature trend. A run of cooler nights would likely push the albies and bonito out sooner, so the morning sessions are worth prioritizing.

Context

Early October sits at the front edge of the fall striped bass run along Massachusetts, when bait and bass start moving toward the bay and outer beaches. A 62°F reading is generally comfortable for fall feeding bass and albies, so the seasonal shift in bait and daylight is doing more of the work. Water temperature alone won't set the bite, so read it against wind and tide. Check state regs before harvesting, since size and season limits can change.
