Peanut bunker pulls stripers and blues into Cape Cod Bay

Cape Cod Bay water is sitting at 61.3°F this morning per NOAA's tide station 8449130, still mild enough to keep the fall bait push rolling. Peanut bunker have flooded inshore water from Plymouth Harbor down through Pegotty Bay and Shore Acres, and per The Fisherman's South Shore MA to ME report those bait schools have pulled a fresh wave of striped bass into the same water, mostly "around-slot" fish following the bunker and running smaller than the 40-inch-plus stripers that showed earlier. On the Cape Cod Bay side, The Fisherman's Cape Cod & Islands report has Barnstable Harbor and Sandy Neck holding pogies too, with surf anglers picking off stripers over 30 inches and bluefish working the sound shore in a steady mixed bag.

What's next

A nor'easter tracked in The Fisherman's New England video forecast is set to move through the region over the next few days, and after a fall run that report calls stagnant so far due to stable weather and slow-dropping water temps, that kind of blow is often the trigger that finally gets stripers moving in earnest along the bay beaches. Falmouth Bait and Tackle and Goose Hummock Shop both report bluefish and false albacore still working the Cape's south-side sound shore in the 10-to-12-pound class, and that action should hold into the week if the front doesn't scatter the bait.

This week's Full Moon tides will add current strength through the bay's harbors and river mouths, so the dawn and dusk stages around those swings are worth planning around for stripers keying on the peanut bunker push before the storm arrives.

Context

This fits the typical late-September transition for Cape Cod Bay, when peanut bunker and other bait begin evacuating estuaries and stripers push inshore to intercept them ahead of the fall migration south. Regional reports describe this year's run as a touch slow to develop compared to a typical fall, with warm, stable weather holding water temperatures up longer than usual. Many expect the approaching nor'easter to accelerate that shift.
