Chesapeake Bluefish, Sea Bass Hold Through Stormy Stretch

NOAA CO-OPS station 8570283 read 67°F this morning, and conditions have mattered more than the bite itself this week. Smith's Bait Shop reported boats on Delaware Bay couldn't get out in the rough seas, and strong winds, 40 to 50 knots at times, kept most of the fleet at the dock. Old Inlet Bait and Tackle said whoever did brave that weather still found bluefish biting metal lures on the incoming tide. Per Hook 'em and Cook 'em, the boats that reached ocean structure came back with black sea bass.

What's next

With the new moon pushing stronger tidal exchange, the incoming-tide bluefish bite Old Inlet Bait and Tackle described should hold or build as the bigger currents push more bait through the inlets. Low tide falls near 2:29 AM and the bay builds to high near 9:01 AM, Eastern time, so that early window is worth planning a trip around while the new-moon tides are running strong.

If the weather settles the way Hook 'em and Cook 'em's report suggests, more boats should get back out to the ocean structure holding black sea bass, and that bite should firm up with steadier effort behind it. Favor the bigger tide swings around the new moon this week before they taper off.

Context

October in the Chesapeake is a transition month: water is cooling and fish typically start shifting toward the bay mouth and nearshore ocean structure ahead of the fall run. A stretch of wind-driven, rough weather like this week's is typical for the season and tends to compress fishing into short windows around tide changes rather than shut it down outright.
