Fall striper run builds along the Jersey oceanfront

The fall run is taking shape in New Jersey. The Fisherman's NJ/DE Bay Region forecast for October 15th reports striped bass in all four coastal counties this week, with adult bunker popping along the oceanfront and an improving sod bank bite in the back bays on soft plastics and topwater. On The Water's Northern New Jersey report for October 15th agrees that the striper bite is picking up as bunker pods fill in along the beaches. Sea bassing is described as decent, and tautog fishing is good from the inlets to the wrecks and reefs. Southern New Jersey is producing too. Pier 47 Marina anglers found clean, green water in the Wildwood back bays, with stripers to 29 inches. Bone or blue Mag Darters worked in daylight, and dark paddletails or small topwater baits worked at night when bait was being crushed at the surface (The Fisherman, Southern NJ). Hands Too Bait and Tackle in Cape May reports excellent tog, sea bass and striper action, with plenty of keeper tog on local wrecks and reefs and one just shy of 10 pounds. NOAA CO-OPS station 8531680 read 63.7°F water at midday.

What's next

Capt Ron's in Atlantic Highlands expects the stripers to turn on once the wind and cold front pass. His sailings have been tied up by north to northeast wind, and he planned to start striper trips on a Sunday. Water temperature still has to come down, and cooling water is what pulls bass into the oceanfront in numbers. The Fisherman's forecast says the table is set for explosive plugging action in the coming days, so expect the surf and beach bite to build as bunker holds close.

For tackle, Capt Ron's lists a bunker snag, a bait rig on a second rod for when pods are found, large shads, jigs with tails, and bucktails. Grumpys Tackle has been stocking glide baits and flies for stripers and bluefish. Keep a rod ready for bluefish and weakfish near the beaches, since The Fisherman's Northern NJ report has the Golden Eagle picking at small blues and weakfish just off the beaches.

The next predicted low tide at station 8531680 is around 7:36 pm Eastern. A moving tide around dawn and dusk is the best window for casting at bunker schools. The moon is at First Quarter, so nights are darker later in the evening. Check the marine forecast before heading out, because Capt Ron's reports several recent trips lost to wind.

Context

Mid-October is typically when the northern New Jersey striper run starts to percolate, as falling water temperatures and baitfish pushing south bring bass along the beaches. The Fisherman's Northern NJ reports note that stripers and baitfish moved into northern waters recently, which fits a normal seasonal arrival. Sea bass and tautog remain steady bottom options through the fall. Tautog bag limits typically rise in mid-November, so check state regs before harvesting. Boats that have been bottom fishing often switch to bass once the bite strengthens.
