Fall smallmouth and walleye bite builds as Ohio waters cool

Water temperatures across our southwest Ohio gauges ran from 51°F to 67°F this morning, a wide spread that tells the story of the week. The 67°F reading at gauge 03242350 is still warm for late October, while gauge 03274000 shows 59°F and gauge 03240000 sits at 51°F with flow near 76 cfs. Fish in the cooler water are already in fall mode. Tactical Bassin's recent fall coverage points to bass chasing baitfish, with an added blade on a swimbait or underspin giving the flash and vibration that triggers strikes. Fishing the Midwest's Mike Frisch calls October his favorite month on the water, noting that boat traffic drops off and anglers head for the woods.

What's next

Expect the cooler stretches to keep sliding toward the low 50s, which pushes smallmouth toward baitfish concentrations and slower, deeper presentations as the week goes on. Mid-day is the window to plan around, when the sun lifts surface temperatures a few degrees and fish feed more actively. Early mornings will be quieter in the cold, clear water.

Fishing the Midwest points to fall walleyes responding to a plain rig, a bottom bouncer with a snell and nightcrawler, which Mike Frisch says works in cooling water as well as in summer. Tactical Bassin also covers fall jerkbait retrieves and how to adjust bait action as water conditions change, a useful approach on the clearer, cooler stretches. Green weeds that are still alive are worth finding, per Fishing the Midwest, since baitfish and gamefish relocate to them as other weeds die back.

The First Quarter moon puts decent light in the evening hours, so late afternoon into dusk is a sensible second window. Flow at gauge 03274000 is running 1,810 cfs, a moderate level, so current seams and eddies should hold fish near the edges.

Context

Late October is typically the heart of fall transition for Ohio freshwater. Baitfish move to shallower, wind-protected areas, and predators follow. Smallmouth and walleye usually feed heavily before winter, and the spread of water temperatures this week suggests the season is arriving at different speeds depending on the stretch. Check state regs before harvesting.
