Fall smallmouth and walleye bites build as Ohio waters cool

Mid-October water is cooling across southwest Ohio, and the USGS gauges show the spread. Gauge 03242350 reads 68°F, gauge 03274000 reads 64°F at 1,840 cfs, and gauge 03240000 reads 58°F at 78.9 cfs. That gradient points to cooler, steadier water in the smaller, lower-flow stretch and warmer water elsewhere. Per Tactical Bassin, fall bass are chasing baitfish, and adding a blade to a swimbait with an underspin is a strong way to add flash and vibration. Fishing the Midwest's Mike Frisch calls October his favorite month for solitude on the water, and he rates a plain snell and nightcrawler rig behind a bottom bouncer as a go-to for fall walleyes.

What's next

With temperatures already in the 50s and 60s, expect fish to keep shifting toward the baitfish they feed on. Per Fishing the Midwest, weeds die back as waters cool, so the fish that sat in them all summer relocate to the green weeds that remain. Look for that green cover first, then work outward to nearby edges and breaks.

Field & Stream notes that fall turnover rarely hits a whole fishery at once. If you meet off-color, debris-filled water, move to clearer shallow bays or creek arms and cover ground with search baits such as spinnerbaits.

The moon is at First Quarter, so expect a decent evening window around dusk on calm days. Tactical Bassin also points to a shallow bite on jigs, soft jerkbaits and topwater for October bass. Fishing the Midwest's bladed swim jig is one of the best multi-species lures, and it can pick up walleyes along with bass. Cold fronts will slow things for a day or two, so favor stable weather and slow your presentation after one passes.

Context

Mid-October is the heart of the fall transition for Ohio's lakes and rivers. Fish feed heavily ahead of winter, and anglers typically see fewer boats, less recreational traffic and more active fish than in summer. Water temperatures in the 50s and 60s are on schedule for this point in the season. Flows on the smaller streams are typically low this time of year, which makes the cooler, clearer stretches the better places to start. Check state regulations before harvesting.
