Best Fishing Hats 2024: Wide-Brim, Boonie, and Performance Caps Reviewed

July 2, 20248 min read
Quick verdict: The Simms Superlight Cap is the best all-around performance fishing cap โ€” lightweight, vented, and built for all-day wear. For maximum sun protection, the Sunday Afternoons Adventure Hat can't be beaten.

A good fishing hat does more than keep the sun off your face โ€” it reduces eye strain from glare, keeps rain off your sunglasses, and can significantly impact how long you can comfortably fish in hot conditions. Here's what separates a great fishing hat from an overpriced souvenir cap.

Buying Guide

Fishing Hat Buying Guide

Cap vs. wide brim: Performance caps (trucker or fitted) provide shade for the face and top of the head. Wide-brim hats (boonie, sun hat) add ear and neck protection โ€” significantly more sun coverage. For long days on open water, wide brim is better. For creek fishing in shade, a cap is fine.

UPF rating: Look for UPF 50+ for meaningful sun protection. UPF is the fabric equivalent of SPF for sunscreen โ€” it measures how much UV radiation the fabric blocks. Standard unrated cotton provides approximately UPF 5-15.

Ventilation: Mesh panels or perforated panels allow heat to escape. Essential for hot summer fishing. A non-vented hat traps heat and becomes unbearable quickly.

Bill length and stiffness: A 3-inch structured bill is the sweet spot for fishing โ€” long enough to shade the face and eyes, stiff enough to maintain shape in wind. Floppy bills are ineffective in wind or when looking down.

Sweatband: Moisture-wicking sweatband prevents the hat from becoming saturated and heavy during hot days. A soaked cotton sweatband also chafes.

Saltwater considerations: Salt encrusts fabric and stiffens sweatbands. Rinse hats with fresh water after saltwater use and let them air dry to extend lifespan.

Polarized sunglasses compatibility: The hat bill should be long enough to eliminate top glare that bypasses your sunglasses. A 3-inch bill combined with side-shield sunglasses is the most complete glare solution.
