Eastern Sierra trout settle into small-bug fall patterns

Per Reno Fly Shop's late September Truckee River report, the river was moving into fall conditions. Cooler temperatures had trout focused on small bugs: Blue Winged Olives, midges and a few remaining caddis. The shop suggested Pullover BWO, BH Zebra Midge and Griffith Gnat patterns among others. By mid-October that fall pattern should be well established across the eastern Sierra, so favor light tippets and small, subtle flies.

What's next

Over the next few days, expect the best surface and emerger action in the softer light of late morning into early afternoon, when Blue Winged Olives typically show on cloudy days. Midges can fill in the gaps through the day. When nothing is rising, a small nymph or midge pupa fished near the bottom is a sound fallback, in line with the BH Zebra Midge and French Nymph style flies Reno Fly Shop recommended.

Flylords Mag notes that autumn is streamer season, as trout shift toward baitfish and sculpins while insect activity fades. A streamer at first light or near dusk is a reasonable second option if you are after a bigger fish. Field & Stream adds that fall can swing quickly between bright calm days and rougher weather, so carry both fine tippet for clear water and heavier gear for streamers.

The waxing crescent moon has little bearing on trout feeding this week. Daylight and air temperature will drive the windows more than moon phase, so plan around the middle of the day.

Context

Mid-October is typically the heart of fall on eastern Sierra trout water. Nights are cold, days are shorter, and fish that were pushed into early mornings and evenings during summer heat feed more freely through the day. Crowds also thin as many anglers turn to hunting. Regulations and seasonal closures vary by water, so check current California rules before you go.
