Cooling rivers set up a fall smallmouth window

Our gauge readings show Connecticut rivers well into the fall cooldown. USGS gauge 01194500 reads 47°F with flow near 36 cfs, while 01193050 reports 56°F and 01184000 on the main stem reads 55°F with flow around 7,010 cfs. That spread, from the high 40s in the smaller flow to the high 50s elsewhere, means fish in different waters are at different stages of the seasonal slowdown. Per Tactical Bassin, bass chasing baitfish in fall respond well to flash and vibration, and a bladed underspin on a paddle tail was highlighted as a way to keep fish biting as conditions change. Fishing the Midwest also notes that fall fish often relocate to the green weeds that remain as other weed beds die off.

What's next

Expect water temperatures to keep sliding through the week, with the coolest readings in the smaller, lower-flow water and the warmest in the slower or more sheltered stretches. As temperatures fall, smallmouth tend to slow down and favor deeper, softer current seams, so work baits slower and closer to the bottom as the week goes on.

The warmest part of the day is typically the best window. Late morning through mid-afternoon, when the sun has had a chance to nudge temperatures up a degree or two, is when a reaction bite is most likely. Per Tactical Bassin, a jerkbait is a strong fall tool, and its retrieve and action can be matched to changing water conditions: shorter pauses when fish are active, longer ones as the water cools.

The First Quarter moon puts moderate light on the water in the evening, so low-light periods around dusk are worth a look for anglers who want to stretch the day. On the main stem, the higher flow reading at 01184000 suggests fish will hold near softer water along the edges, so target eddies and seams rather than the main push.

Gauge 01193050 returned a negative flow value, which is an instrument artifact in tidally affected or backwatered reaches, so rely on the temperature there and not the flow.

Context

Mid to late October is typically the heart of the fall transition for Connecticut freshwater. Summer patterns are gone, baitfish are moving, and gamefish feed more aggressively ahead of winter, then gradually settle into deeper holding water as temperatures drop toward the 40s. Readings in the high 40s to mid 50s are right on schedule for this point in the season. Smallmouth in rivers generally begin consolidating into wintering areas as water drops toward the low 50s, so this is a good stretch to catch them before they go deep and slow down. Check state regulations for seasons and limits before keeping any fish.
