Delaware Bay bite rebounds as nor'easter winds finally ease

Delaware Bay water held at 66.7 degrees this week as a punishing nor'easter finally eased, with wind gusts Eric Burnley clocked above 50 knots and more than three inches of rain keeping nearly every boat tied to the dock. Old Inlet Bait and Tackle reported blues taken on metal lures during incoming water, about the only action anyone managed through the blow. At Smith's Bait Shop in Port Mahon, the bite held up through late September and is expected to build into October, with weakfish coming on yellow bucktails and yellow worms over the bay's reef sites. Further south at Indian River Inlet, Hook 'em and Cook 'em logged fluke and sea bass catches on the days the Judy V could clear the inlet, including a 7.4-pound fluke aboard the Gale Force and a boxed run of 11 bluefish for a group of kids fishing the inlet itself.

What's next

Burnley expects the first week of October to fish noticeably better now that the weather has broken, though he's flagging the beach erosion and shifted bottom structure the storm left behind as something anglers will need to relearn on the water. With winds laying down, boats sidelined by the blow should start clearing the inlets again, and the pre-storm pattern reported up the bay by Hands Too Bait and Tackle, stripers, weakfish and blues keeping anglers busy on most tides and times of day, is the bite worth watching for as conditions settle. Port Mahon's reef sites should keep producing weakfish and fluke as the month opens, and the moon moving past last quarter should firm up tidal flow for anglers working bucktails and live minnows over the next few days. Plan around this calmer stretch rather than chasing fish mid-storm.

Context

Early October sits in the heart of Delaware Bay's fall transition, when striped bass, weakfish and bluefish push into the bay ahead of the winter run while fluke and sea bass stay active on reef structure before the water cools further. This year's pattern reads on schedule rather than late, the nor'easter simply compressed a week of fishing time rather than the fish falling behind, and the pre-storm reports of stripers and weakfish keeping Cape May anglers busy on most tides suggest the fall bite was already underway before the storm interrupted it.
