Sarasota snook settle into docks and bridges as fall shift begins

Water temps are holding in the low 80s across the bay this week, with NOAA CO-OPS station 8726724 at Clearwater Beach reading 81.9°F and station 8726520 at St. Petersburg at 81.7°F. Capt. Rick Grassett of CB's Saltwater Outfitters in Sarasota reports snook pulling off the beaches and passes and settling into the Intracoastal Waterway, staging around docks, bridges and shallow grass flats as they begin their move toward wintering areas. Capt. Kelly Kurtz, also fishing out of CB's on Siesta Key, says the inshore bite in Sarasota Bay has stayed active for snook and redfish, with one recent angler landing a redfish before release.

What's next

Expect snook to keep sliding deeper into their fall holding spots over the next few days, per Grassett's October outlook, which points anglers to docks and bridges in the ICW and to shallow flats rather than the open passes. Live shrimp fished tight to structure, or pilchards worked over the shallows, are the approach CB's is recommending this week. Tide timing differs by side of the bay: Clearwater Beach's next high runs near 11:00 AM with a low around 5:10 PM, while St. Petersburg's high falls later, close to 1:25 PM, with a low near 7:40 PM. Fishing the two to three hours around those swings, especially the moving water into the bridges and docks Grassett flagged, should line up with the better bites. With a waning crescent moon heading toward the new moon this weekend, tidal swings should stay moderate rather than extreme, which tends to keep snook holding tight to structure instead of scattering.

Context

October sits right at the heart of the seasonal handoff for Tampa Bay and Sarasota snook, as fish leave summer beach and pass territory for ICW wintering grounds, matching Grassett's notes on timing. Redfish typically stay strong on the inshore flats and bay structure through the fall as water temperatures ease down from summer peaks. Tarpon are headed the other direction. Migratory fish that staged near bridges and deep grass flats in September are continuing to thin out of the coastal Gulf as they move toward open water, which is the normal progression for this point in the calendar.
