Snook season fires up in Sarasota as tarpon push inside

Water temps sit near 83°F in Tampa Bay and Sarasota this week, per NOAA CO-OPS stations 8726520 and 8726724, right in line with the seasonal shift into fall snook season. Capt. Brandon Naeve of CB's Saltwater Outfitters says the Gulf Coast's fall snook season, which opened September 1, has fish at their most active in the warm water. Capt. Rick Grassett's September forecast from the same shop has snook holding strong in the surf and around ICW docks and bridges near passes, with live shrimp and pilchards producing bites. In Sarasota Bay, Capt. Kelly Kurtz reports an active inshore bite that includes snook and redfish, landing a redfish for a client this past week. Tarpon are shifting too: Grassett notes adult migratory tarpon are thinning out in the coastal Gulf as they move into inside waters around bridges and deep grass flats ahead of their fall migration.

What's next

Grassett's October outlook, already published by CB's Saltwater Outfitters, calls for snook to keep working off the passes and beaches and stage around docks, bridges, and shallow flats as they head toward wintering grounds, a move that should pick up as water starts to cool into October. Live shrimp around structure, plus smaller lures and flies on the flats, should keep producing through that transition.

Tide-wise, low water arrives mid-to-late morning across the bay, with the flood building toward a mid-afternoon high near 3:30 to 3:45 PM. Working the last two hours of the incoming tide around bridge shadows and ICW docks lines up well with where Grassett and Kurtz are finding fish right now. The waning gibbous moon keeps tidal swings moderate rather than the exaggerated flows of a full or new moon, which should spread the bite out rather than concentrate it into short windows.

Expect tarpon numbers to keep tapering through October as the last coastal Gulf fish slide into passes and inside waters before pushing further south.

Context

Early fall is the seasonal hinge for Tampa Bay and Sarasota: snook coming off summer's spawning closure into open season while the last tarpon of the summer run thin out ahead of their winter move. This week's pattern is tracking on schedule for late September, with the fall snook bite building rather than arriving early or late. Redfish typically settle into a steadier inshore presence through fall as water cools, and this week's Sarasota Bay report fits that normal progression. Nothing here points to an unusually early or late season.
