Fall brown trout push into pre-spawn mode on Montana freestone water

Brown trout are the story this week. Flylords Mag notes that past mid-October the brown trout spawn is in full swing across many regions, with fish digging redds and paired up, and that the predictably strong fishing comes as fish vie for prime lies and others feed on eggs. Flylords also flags that anglers should avoid targeting fish on redds. A separate Flylords piece says autumn is streamer season, as cooling water and fading insects push trout toward baitfish and sculpins. Our gauge readings fit that picture. USGS gauge 06043120 shows 42°F water at 232 cfs, while gauges 06041500 and 06041000 read 46°F and 48°F with flows around 1,230 and 1,210 cfs. Those temperatures sit in the range where browns turn aggressive and territorial.

What's next

Expect the next two to three days to hold steady if temperatures stay cool, with water in the low to upper 40s on the gauges we track. Browns that are staging to spawn should keep feeding hard on streamers, and per Flylords Mag, drifting streamers rather than only stripping them is worth trying in early autumn, since it lets fish look at the fly longer.

For timing, Caddis Fly (OR) describes afternoon and evening hatches of October caddis, mahogany duns, blue winged olives and small stones in its region, and that same pattern of late-day bugs commonly shows up on cold, clear freestone water elsewhere. Plan to nymph or fish streamers through the morning, then watch for rises later in the day. Trout Unlimited's TROUT Tip on weight reminds us that the right amount of weight on a nymph rig matters, so add or remove split shot as you move between the faster 1,200 cfs water and the gentler 232 cfs reach.

The moon is at First Quarter, which gives decent evening light for the last hour of the day. Be careful where you step. If you see pale, cleaned gravel patches, that is likely a redd, so wade around it. Check current regulations before keeping any fish, since spawn-season closures and special rules typically apply.

Context

Late October is on schedule for the brown trout spawn across much of the northern Rockies. This is the transition from summer patterns to the fall streamer and egg bite, and water that was warm in August has now cooled into the 40s.

MT FWP Fishing News reports that the Fish and Wildlife Commission approved the 2027-2028 fishing regulations during its October meeting, so it is worth reading the updated rules ahead of next season. FWP also notes that some aquatic invasive species inspection stations remain open through October in high-risk corridors, and anglers with watercraft must stop at any station they encounter.

As flows settle and the days shorten, expect fewer anglers on the water and more room to work good runs. Winter patterns with smaller flies and slower presentations typically arrive within a few weeks.
