Fall Brown Trout Window Opens on Cooling Montana Rivers

Gauge readings across the Yellowstone and Missouri drainages show water at 46°F at three USGS sites (06043120, 06041500 and 06041000), a cool range that typically puts Brown Trout in pre-spawn mode and more willing to chase a meal. Flows were 241 cfs at gauge 06043120, 1,230 cfs at 06041500, 1,200 cfs at 06041000 and 355 cfs at 06043500, a modest, fishable range for mid-October. Per Flylords Mag this week, autumn is streamer season as trout pack on calories before winter, and an angler story there describes sight-fishing a big fall brown sipping the surface on a bright, clear day.

What's next

Expect the cool readings to hold, which keeps fish feeding through the middle of the day rather than only at dawn and dusk. Flylords Mag recommends drifting streamers in early autumn, working baitfish and sculpin imitations through the deeper runs where trout stage ahead of winter. Caddis Fly (OR) lists a jigged articulated sculpin among its recent patterns and notes October Caddis, Mahogany Duns, Blue Winged Olives and small stones hatching in afternoon and evening, a useful reference for timing dry-fly and nymph windows on a similar cool-water pattern.

Plan your best hours for late morning through early afternoon, when the water has had a few hours of sun. A First Quarter moon sets in the late evening, so there is little moonlight to push fish into odd feeding hours. Trout Unlimited's weight tip is worth remembering on the heavier 1,200 cfs stretches: add weight until the nymph rig ticks bottom, then back off if you are snagging.

MT FWP Fishing News reports that spawning closures on some rivers began October 1 and that the Big Hole River Section 1 closure remained in place after Section 5 reopened. Check current state regulations and closures before heading out, and avoid wading across spawning redds.

Context

Mid to late October is typically the heart of the fall Brown Trout season in southwest Montana, when cooling water triggers aggressive feeding and spawning movement. Water in the mid-40s is on schedule for this point in the calendar. Streamer fishing tends to peak now, and reduced boat traffic and cooler air mean quieter water than summer. Flows usually settle lower through fall, so the current readings sit comfortably in range.
