Red drum spread from the Pamlico to the Topsail surf this week

Water at NOAA CO-OPS station 8652587 read 72.9°F at 1:12 p.m. EDT, and redfish are the main story this week. Per Fisherman's Post (NC), Nathan of East Coast Sports is seeing a run of slot-sized red drum in the surf and off the piers around Topsail and Sneads Ferry, with some over-slot fish mixed in. Donald of Custom Marine Fabrication says red drum are the main focus on the Pamlico/Neuse, with fish spread through the river and plenty of bait up in the system. Morgan of The Reel Outdoors reports scattered redfish on the Swansboro and Emerald Isle beachfront, with bluefish also around. Three local shops and guides pointing at the same fish is the kind of consistency worth acting on, so we'd lead with redfish and treat bluefish as a bonus.

What's next

Tides set the rhythm for the next few days. High water comes at 4:27 p.m. EDT at station 8652587 and 5:08 p.m. EDT at station 8654467, and no low is returned in that window, so the late-afternoon stretch around those highs is the time to plan around.

The Last Quarter moon brings neap tides, which typically means weaker current through the inlets and sounds and an easier time working the flats and pilings.

If the Topsail and Pamlico reports hold, the surf and river redfish bite should carry into the weekend. The Swansboro bluefish is the one to watch, since a single scattered report is not yet a pattern.

Context

Early October is typically when redfish move into the surf and back bays as the water cools and fish feed up on migrating bait before colder months. A water temperature around 73°F sits within the usual range for this stretch of the NC coast, so this reads as a normal fall pattern rather than an early or late one. Bluefish and redfish both tend to follow bait, so a healthy bait push in the river usually means fish are staying on the feed. Check state regs before harvesting, since red drum slot and over-slot limits are specific and can change.
