Fall striper run builds as Jersey Shore post-storm bite settles

Striped bass are the story as the fall run starts to percolate. Per OTW Northern New Jersey's October 8 report, there was better news on the striper front that week after an epic nor'easter had put all fishing on hold at the start of the month. Blue Chip Sportfishing (NJ) notes striped bass season in New Jersey is in full swing, and Capt Ron's Atlantic Highlands NJ says the sea bass trips are done for the year, with striper trips starting Sunday on a 7:00am to 2:30pm schedule. The NOAA CO-OPS station 8531680 reads 65.7°F water, still warm for this stage of the run. Fishermans HQ LBI (NJ) described a flat ocean and mid-60s surf on October 9, with a mixed bag along the beaches: bluefish, a couple of striped bass, and some out-of-season fluke still around the bay and inlet. Tautog is one of the better species to target right now per the same shop.

What's next

Expect the striper bite to keep building as water cools. Capt Ron's Atlantic Highlands NJ pointed out earlier this month that the water had to come down a bit before stripers showed up locally, and with the station still in the mid-60s, patience is the plan. Weather has been a recurring problem, so watch the marine forecast closely and plan around the gaps between fronts.

For gear, Capt Ron's Atlantic Highlands NJ lists a bunker snag, a second rod rigged with bait in case the boats find bunker pods, large shads, plain or tailed jigs, and a mix of heavy metal. Grumpys Tackle (NJ) is stocking new glide baits for the striper crowd, a sign the shop expects bigger fish. Per On The Water, bunker are a key driver of fall blitzes, so birds working over bait near inlets are your cue.

With a waxing crescent moon, expect darker evenings, which tends to favor night and dawn bites for surf anglers. Check state regs before keeping any fish.

Context

Mid-October is typically when the fall striper migration shifts into gear along the Jersey coast, as baitfish and gamefish move south and out of the bays. Sea bass and fluke seasons are winding down while striper, bluefish and tautog take over. A nor'easter at the start of the month can scatter bait and delay the push by a week or so, which fits what boats have described. Warmer than ideal water often means the run is a touch late rather than missing, and it usually catches up quickly once temperatures slide through the 50s.
