Perch, crappie and tog lead the fall bite across South Jersey

Cooling water is pushing the fall pattern along the Delaware River and Pine Barrens. USGS gauge 01408029 reads 60°F with 14 cfs of flow, gauge 01408048 reads 64°F, and gauge 01407081 reads 66°F. Gauge 01408000 shows 47.7 cfs. Per The Fisherman — Southern NJ, Higbee's Bait and Tackle says the creeks around Fortescue are giving up lots of big white perch on bloodworms. Once you find a school, every bit of bloodworm gets a healthy perch. The Fisherman — NJ/DE Freshwater reports that crappie and perch fishing has picked up in most Delaware ponds and dam spillways, with small minnows and jig combinations producing. In the cedar waters, Allen's Dock says perch and crappie fishing were good, and Hands Too Bait and Tackle says killies are taking the bulk of the pickerel. Bass fishing in Delaware lakes slowed this past week. Cooler temps have bass and crappie feeding in Nockamixon and Galena, with good smallmouth reports from the river.

What's next

The trend favors the panfish and the shallow-water crowd. Crappie and perch should keep improving as water temperatures keep dropping, and small minnow and jig combinations around spillways and structure are the safest play. Bloodworms remain the go-to for perch in tidal creeks.

Bass should respond to cooler water as well. Per Tactical Bassin (blog), October is a good time for shallow jigs, soft jerkbaits and topwater, and Field & Stream advises searching with spinnerbaits and finding cleaner water if turnover muddies a lake. Turnover rarely hits an entire lake at once, so shallow bays and creek arms are a good place to look first.

With a waxing crescent moon, expect plenty of low-light hours. Dawn and dusk are good windows to plan around. Flow at gauge 01408029 is low at 14 cfs, so favor clean, quiet water and lighter presentations. Check the forecast before heading out, since recent weeks have brought repeated coastal weather.

Context

Mid-October is the heart of the fall transition for South Jersey freshwater. Water cools out of the 70s, weed beds start dying back, and baitfish and gamefish relocate to remaining green cover, as Fishing the Midwest notes about fall patterns in general. Panfish school up and become easy to find once located, which fits what we are hearing from the tidal creeks and ponds.

This is on schedule for the season. Perch in the tidal streams, crappie and bass in the lakes, and pickerel in the cedar waters is the typical fall mix. Anglers also tend to shift attention to boats coming out of the water and to hunting, so pressure on freshwater drops. Check state regulations before harvesting anything.
