Sea Bass and Fluke Keep NJ Boats Busy at Season's Turn

NOAA's Delaware Bay-area station logged water temps at 66.9°F this morning, still comfortable enough to keep the fall bite rolling along the Jersey coast. Black sea bass are the standout right now — Capt Ron's out of Atlantic Highlands reports steady drops producing enough fish for everyone aboard on back-to-back trips, and Blue Chip Sportfishing says its sea bass charters are doing very good, with most trips getting enough for the whole boat. Fluke are hanging on later than usual: Blue Chip has them mixing with sea bass on half- and full-day trips, Capt Ron put fluke up to four pounds in the box over the weekend, and Fishermans HQ in Long Beach Island notes it's surprising how many fluke are still showing in the bay, inlet and surf even with the recreational season closed. Bluefish and a handful of striped bass are turning up in that same LBI mixed bag, while tautog is listed as one of the better targets right now.

What's next

Expect the pattern to hold through the new moon, which should push stronger tidal swings and keep bait moving onto structure. With water still in the mid-60s, striped bass should keep trickling through the surf and back bays as the early fall migration builds, and bluefish should stay mixed into that push for another few weeks. Fluke numbers should taper as temperatures drop further; the season is already closed per Fishermans HQ's report, so any caught now are holdovers to release rather than a late-season reopening.

Sea bass looks like the most reliable target into the weekend, especially on lighter-wind days, given the string of good trips both Capt Ron and Blue Chip have logged this stretch. Tautog should keep improving as the water continues to cool, which typically pulls them tighter onto structure. Plan trips around the bigger new-moon tidal exchange for stronger current on structure, and check the weekend marine forecast before committing to a boat day.

Context

This fits the typical early-October script for the New Jersey coast: black sea bass and tautog activity builds as water eases into the mid-to-upper 60s, while striped bass begin stacking up ahead of the main fall migration. The Delaware Bay estuary is in its seasonal shoulder period, with NJ Fish & Wildlife's long-running juvenile finfish trawl survey there tracking exactly this kind of transition as species shift between nursery grounds and open water. Fluke still showing up this late is a bit unusual, since the season typically closes before water temps push into bite-slowing range, so the fish present now read as holdovers rather than a resurgence. Overall, the week looks on-schedule for the fall run, not notably early or late.
