Striper run builds along the Jersey oceanfront as bunker arrive

The fall striper run is taking shape along the Jersey Shore. Per The Fisherman — New Jersey edition, striped bass reports are coming from Monmouth, Ocean, Atlantic and Cape May counties, and adult bunker are popping along the oceanfront, which sets the table for plugging action. In the bays, cooler nights and falling water temps have improved the sod bank bite, with soft plastics and topwater leading. OTW Northern New Jersey says the striper bite is picking up as bunker pods fill in along the beaches, while sea bassing is decent and tautog fishing is good from the inlets to the wrecks and reefs. Water temperature is 65.8°F at NOAA CO-OPS station 8534720 and 67.3°F at station 8536110. That is still warm for the run, and Fishermans HQ LBI (NJ) reports surf temperatures holding in the mid-60s with a mixed bag along the beaches: kingfish, blowfish, bluefish and a couple of stripers. South Jersey is the brightest spot for bass. The Fisherman — NJ/DE Surf relays reports from Hands Too Bait and Tackle of stripers on the sod banks and bridges on 3/8-ounce leadheads with soft plastics, including fish from 40 to 46 inches and a 48-incher, plus an honest blitz at Hereford Inlet. The Fisherman — Southern NJ adds that bone or blue Mag Darters took stripers to 29 inches in the Wildwood back bays by day, while at night fish crushed bait on the surface and dark paddletails or small topwater plugs worked.

What's next

Expect the oceanfront striper bite to keep building as bunker pods push down the beaches. The Fisherman — New Jersey edition says the table is set for explosive plugging in the coming days, so dawn and dusk sessions around inlets and bunker schools are the plan. Bring a bunker snag and a second rod rigged with bait in case pods show up, a tip Capt Ron's Atlantic Highlands NJ gives for the party boat striper trips that started there.

The surf is not fully switched on yet. Riptide Bait and Tackle, per The Fisherman — NJ/DE Surf, is still waiting for the first keeper striper on the Brigantine beach, and The Fisherman — Central NJ notes the major fall run has yet to kick in around Beach Haven. Kingfish should hold on bloodworms and Fishbites, and spike weakfish have started to show in the surf at Beach Haven.

Blackfish are the dependable option right now. One Stop Bait and Tackle in Atlantic City reports tog on a chew at the AC jetties, with green crabs and sand fleas scoring. Fishermans HQ LBI (NJ) calls tautog one of the better targets. Offshore, The Fisherman — Central NJ says sea bass fishing is strong when weather allows, on jigs, clams and squid, though Capt Ron's reports plenty of short fish and lots of drops. Watch the marine forecast, as repeated weather windows have limited boat days.

Context

Mid October is typically when the northern Jersey striper run starts to percolate, as baitfish move out of the estuaries and water temperatures slide. This year's water in the mid-60s is on the warm side, which fits reports of kingfish, blowfish and weakfish still lingering alongside the first stripers. Typically the best surf bite follows a drop in temperature and a few northerly winds.

Tautog season is also ramping up on the structure and jetties, and keeper regulations change through fall, so check state regs before harvesting. Bluefish and sea bass remain part of the mix while the run builds.
