Tautog bite builds on Delaware Bay jetties as bass feed the tides

Delaware Bay water sat at 66.6°F this morning per NOAA CO-OPS station 8537121, mild enough to keep the fall bite stacking up along the jetties. Big Dave's Tackle, reporting through The Fisherman — Southern NJ, says the bay saw a little action this week, with sheepshead and tautog coming off the Cape May Jetties on green crabs and sand fleas, while the open bay stayed quieter with only scattered weakfish, spot, and croakers away from structure. Structure is clearly outproducing open water right now. South along the surf, One Stop Bait and Tackle, via The Fisherman — NJ/DE Surf, says the tautog chew on the AC Jetty rocks picked back up as soon as last weekend's storm passed, with keepers to 4 pounds on sand fleas, and striped bass are hitting mainly at night in the same stretch. Jingles Bait and Tackle reports tautog to 3 pounds off the rockpiles near Beach Haven, also on sand fleas. In Cape May, Hands Too Bait and Tackle says the bite bounced back well post-storm: weakfish of quality size in Wildwood on pink Zooms and bucktails, smaller bluefish mixed through at 1 to 3 pounds, and stripers feeding heavily on the back bay sod banks.

What's next

The next high tide at station 8537121 rolls in around 9:37 AM ET today, with the overnight low already past at 3:41 AM ET. Working the last couple hours of the incoming tide against jetty structure is the move for tautog over the next few days, since that's exactly the window One Stop and Jingles describe producing their better fish. The moon is waning toward new phase later this month, which should build stronger tidal swings and push more bait against the rocks and sod banks, typically the trigger for a stronger night striper bite. Riptide Bait and Tackle in Brigantine is still watching for the first stripers to show after the nor'easter chewed up the beach there, so that stretch should come alive once water clarity finishes recovering. With weather settling into the week, expect the Cape May weakfish and bluefish action Hands Too described to hold steady, and tautog pressure on the jetties to keep building as water eases toward the mid-60s.

Context

October puts the Delaware Bay region squarely in its fall transition: tautog season ramping up on jetty structure is right on schedule, and a striped bass push through the back bays and sod banks is typical for this point in the run. Weakfish thinning out in the open bay while still holding in the surf zone near the inlets tracks the usual seasonal shift as bait pulls out of the shallows. Nothing in this week's reports reads early or late for Delaware Bay in October.
