Tog and bass overlap as RI's fall run builds

Water in the bay is sitting near 62 to 63°F, with NOAA CO-OPS stations 8452660 and 8452944 reading 62.8°F and 62.4°F this morning. That is comfortable for a mixed fall bite. Per The Fisherman — Rhode Island, Quonnie Bait and Tackle reports local anglers did well on striped bass from the beaches and breachways, with plenty of bait moving along the beaches and out of the salt ponds. Snug Harbor Marina adds that bass are producing locally and that some weakfish turned up along the south shore this past week.

What's next

Tides give us the clearest windows today. The next high at station 8452660 is around 10:10 AM local, with the following low near 3:47 PM. Station 8452944 shows a similar rhythm, high near 10:26 AM and low near 3:45 PM. Moving water around the turn is where bait gets pushed out of breachways, so plan to be set up an hour either side of those times.

Per The Fisherman — Rhode Island, Quonnie Bait and Tackle says tautog fishing has been picking up with more keeper-sized fish coming from shore and by boat. Booked Off Charters expects to shift to mostly tautog soon and notes that October into November is prime time for tog in Rhode Island, with some of the best fishing of the year still to come. Black sea bass are still around, though Quonnie reports most are short of legal size.

The moon is a waxing crescent, so evening light will fade early. Expect the dusk and dawn windows to carry the stronger striper feeds, while midday favors bottom fishing for tog on structure.

Context

Mid-October is typically the heart of the fall transition on Narragansett Bay. Baitfish leave the salt ponds, stripers feed hard on them, and tautog move onto structure as water cools through the low 60s and into the 50s. Black sea bass begin to give way to tog on the party boats around this time. The run usually stays productive into November, so there is time to catch the peak even if this week's weather is not perfect.
