Fall bass bite builds as Upstate water keeps cooling

Gauge readings across the region show water in the high 50s to mid 60s, right in the range where fall bass start following baitfish. USGS gauge 02156500 reads 66°F with 1,560 cfs, and gauge 02163001 reads 64°F at 288 cfs. The smaller, higher-elevation stream at gauge 021623975 is cooler at 58°F with just 16.9 cfs. B.A.S.S. News describes the pattern this way: as water temperatures drop, baitfish gather in tight schools, which makes them vulnerable, and bass follow them. Tactical Bassin (blog) adds that when bass are chasing baitfish in the fall, a paddle tail with a blade, such as an underspin, adds flash and vibration. Largemouth Bass are our Active call.

What's next

Expect the cooling trend to continue, which should keep pushing baitfish into tighter groups and pulling bass shallower to feed. B.A.S.S. News notes the fall bite window opens wide and runs through much of the day, so you don't have to be on the water at dawn.

Plan around the first half of the day and the last two hours of light. Wind-blown banks and points that concentrate bait are the first places to check. With the First Quarter moon, we expect moderate light overnight and decent low-light feeding at both ends of the day.

Tactical Bassin (blog) also covers fall jerkbait fishing, a good option as the water keeps dropping. Change retrieves and colors with the light and the wind. If the bite is slow, swap to a bladed swimbait or underspin and cover water until you find active schools.

Context

Mid-October is typically the heart of the fall feed on Southeast reservoirs, and this year looks on schedule. Surface temperatures in the 60s are the usual trigger for bass to leave summer holding areas and chase bait into creeks and coves. Wired 2 Fish reports that finesse and vertical presentations stay effective around cover on pressured waters. The fall bite is typically the second best of the year after spring.
