Leader and tippet selection matters more than most fly fishers think. Clear water trout will refuse a perfectly presented fly on 4X nylon but eat the same fly on 5X fluorocarbon. Fluorocarbon vs. nylon decision: - Nymphing subsurface: Fluorocarbon (sinks faster, less visible) - Dry fly on surface: Nylon (more supple, better drift, slight float) - Streamers: Fluorocarbon or heavy nylon (doesn't matter much — fish aren't inspecting) - Saltwater: Fluorocarbon (abrasion resistance and near-invisibility)
Leader construction: A tapered leader (butt 30 lb → mid 12 lb → tippet 4X-6X) transfers energy from fly line to fly smoothly. Pre-built knotless tapered leaders (Rio, Scientific Anglers) are the standard — they're inexpensive and precise.
Tippet material wear: Replace tippet after catching multiple fish or after any significant abrasion. The section between fly and first tippet connection weakens from fish handling, rock contact, and UV exposure.
