Leader and tippet selection matters more than most fly fishers think. Clear water trout will refuse a perfectly presented fly on 4X nylon but eat the same fly on 5X fluorocarbon. Understanding when fluorocarbon's sinking properties and near-invisibility give an edge versus when nylon's suppleness is preferred makes a real difference in catch rates.

Tippet size chart: - 0X (0.011" / ~15 lb): Large streamers, pike flies, salmon - 1X (0.010" / 13 lb): Large streamers, tarpon - 2X (0.009" / 11 lb): Medium streamers, bass bugs - 3X (0.008" / 8 lb): Woolly Buggers, weighted nymphs - 4X (0.007" / 6 lb): Standard trout nymphs and dry flies - 5X (0.006" / 4 lb): Fine trout presentation in clear water - 6X (0.005" / 3 lb): Very technical presentation, tiny flies - 7X (0.004" / 2 lb): Extreme technical fishing, size 20-28 flies
Fluorocarbon vs. nylon decision: - Nymphing subsurface: Fluorocarbon (sinks faster, less visible) - Dry fly on surface: Nylon (more supple, better drift, slight float) - Streamers: Fluorocarbon or heavy nylon (doesn't matter much — fish aren't inspecting) - Saltwater: Fluorocarbon (abrasion resistance and near-invisibility)
Leader construction: A tapered leader (butt 30 lb → mid 12 lb → tippet 4X-6X) transfers energy from fly line to fly smoothly. Pre-built knotless tapered leaders (Rio, Scientific Anglers) are the standard — they're inexpensive and precise.
Tippet material wear: Replace tippet after catching multiple fish or after any significant abrasion. The section between fly and first tippet connection weakens from fish handling, rock contact, and UV exposure.
