Do You Need a Fishing License in Connecticut?

Most anglers 16 and older in Connecticut need a fishing license to fish in any public freshwater or saltwater in the state. There are a few exceptions:

- **Under 16:** No license required for freshwater or saltwater fishing. - **Residents 65+:** Free fishing license available (inland license). - **Free fishing days:** CT DEEP designates a few days per year when no license is required โ€” typically a weekend in June. Check the DEEP website each year for current dates. - **Coastal fishing from shore:** Connecticut requires a separate Marine Recreational Fishing license for saltwater fishing (details below).

Types of CT Fishing Licenses

**Inland Fishing License:** Required to fish freshwater bodies in CT โ€” lakes, ponds, rivers, and streams. This covers bass, trout, perch, pickerel, catfish, and all other freshwater species. - Resident: $19/year - Non-Resident: $40/year - Resident 65+: Free - 1-day license: Available for non-residents

**Marine Recreational Fishing License:** Required to fish in CT's tidal saltwater โ€” Long Island Sound, tidal rivers, coastal marshes, and offshore. Required for striped bass, bluefish, fluke, sea bass, tautog, etc. - Resident: $10/year (very affordable relative to other states) - Non-Resident: $15/year

**Trout and Salmon Stamp:** Required in addition to the inland license to fish designated trout management areas and quality trout waters. $5/year for residents.

**Combination License:** Available packaging inland + marine licenses together at a slight discount.

Prices as of recent license year โ€” verify current fees at DEEP.ct.gov before purchasing.

How to Buy a CT Fishing License

**Online (easiest):** Purchase directly at DEEP.ct.gov/buy-license. Print or save the PDF โ€” it's immediately valid.

**At license agents:** Hardware stores, bait and tackle shops, and sporting goods stores throughout CT sell licenses. Authorized dealers include major chains and many local tackle shops. Cash or credit card accepted.

**By mail:** Not commonly used anymore โ€” online is faster and the result is the same.

**Note on storage:** Keep your license accessible while fishing โ€” you may be asked to show it to a DEEP Environmental Conservation Officer (ECO). Digital copies on your phone are generally accepted but a printed copy avoids any technology issues.

Fishing Regulations in Connecticut

A license is not a permit to take any fish in any quantity. CT fishing regulations specify size limits, bag limits, seasons, and gear restrictions by species and water body. Key regulations resources:

- **CT DEEP Freshwater Fishing Regulations booklet:** Free at license agents and downloadable from DEEP.ct.gov. Read this before fishing new waters. - **CT DEEP Marine Regulations:** Separate booklet for saltwater species. Updated annually โ€” species like striped bass and fluke have regulations that change from year to year. - **Specific water body regulations:** Some CT lakes and rivers have special rules beyond the general statewide regulations. The DEEP booklet lists these water-by-water.

**High-priority regulations to know:** - Striped bass slot limit (changes annually โ€” check current year regulations) - Fluke/summer flounder minimum size (typically 18 inches) and bag limit - Trout minimum size and season dates - Black bass minimum size (12 inches most waters; 15 inches in some designated lakes)

License Enforcement and Penalties

CT DEEP ECOs (Environmental Conservation Officers) regularly check anglers for licenses and compliance. Officers can check your license, examine your catch, and verify you're fishing legal gear during the permitted season. They are professional and most interactions are routine license checks.

Fishing without a license in CT carries a fine of up to $100 for a first offense. Poaching (keeping undersized or over-limit fish, fishing closed areas, or using illegal gear) carries significantly higher penalties and potential loss of fishing privileges. It's genuinely not worth it โ€” a fishing license costs less than one good lunch.
