Missouri rivers run high and warm, fall bite builds

Both USGS gauges (06935550 and 06934500) show Missouri River flow near 70,000 cfs with water temperature at 66 to 67°F as of late Sunday evening. That is a lot of water for mid-October, and it keeps the main channel pushed, stained and fast. Fish will hold tight to current breaks, wing dikes, tributary mouths and slack water along the banks rather than roaming open channel. Per Fishing the Midwest, October is prime time to be on the water, with pressure down and fish feeding ahead of winter. Their fall walleye write-up credits a plain bottom-bouncer rig with a snelled nightcrawler for cooler-water walleyes. Field & Stream notes that turnover rarely hits a fishery all at once, so clean water is the most direct path to bass.

What's next

With flow this high, expect fish to concentrate in the softer water. Eddies behind structure, creek and tributary mouths, and inside bends are the first places to check, and clearer water entering from smaller streams is worth seeking out. Turnover guidance from Field & Stream points the same way: move away from off-color, debris-laden water and hunt for cleaner pockets.

If the river eases over the coming days, fish tend to spread back out along current seams and deeper edges. Falling and clearing water usually improves the bite for smallmouth and walleye. A steady drop is the trend to watch on the gauges before committing to a spot.

The First Quarter moon means a moderate light cycle. Dawn and dusk are the windows to plan around, when fish move shallower to feed and the river's brighter midday glare is off the water.

For technique, Tactical Bassin shows swimbaits on blade-equipped underspins working well when bass chase baitfish in the fall. Their October video also points to jigs, soft jerkbaits and topwater in shallow water. Those are options for the calmer backwaters and tributary arms.

Context

Mid-October is typically a transition period on Missouri and Ozark rivers. Water temperatures in the 60s sit above where many fall patterns fully lock in, so fish are still active and feeding heavily as forage moves. Flow this elevated is on the high side for the season, and it often follows a wet stretch. Expect conditions to keep shifting as the water cools toward the 50s in the weeks ahead.
