Taneycomo rainbows rebound as browns start their fall run

Lilleys Landing reported on October 1 that trout fishing on Lake Taneycomo has improved over the last month, with good numbers of rainbows through the upper lake, a clear step up from summer. Their trophy-sized rainbows are still showing in good numbers, and brown trout are arriving in the upper lake for the fall spawning run.

What's next

Expect the upper lake to stay the focus. Lilleys Landing pointed to the upper stretch as the place where rainbows have been concentrated, and the brown trout are staging there ahead of spawning, so that is where to spend your time.

Generation schedules drive the fishing on Taneycomo. Earlier in the season Lilleys Landing described minimum flow through the morning and into the afternoon, then stepped-up generation from mid-afternoon into the evening. If that pattern holds, plan around the quieter morning water for easier wading and drifting, and check the release schedule before you launch, since the schedule can change the day.

The gauge feeding this report is not returning a usable reading right now, so confirm flow with the dam operator before committing to a spot. The first quarter moon puts moonset around midnight, leaving darker pre-dawn hours, which can favor low-light feeding early in the day.

For technique, Lilleys Landing's August report described a straight-line drift with a weight on the bottom and a drop shot loop about 18 inches above it, tipped with fluorocarbon tippet. Their guides also did well in the afternoons with a Provo rig. Both are worth carrying if the bite stays aggressive.

Context

Mid-October sits squarely in the fall transition for Ozark tailwater trout. Cooler nights and shorter days typically bring more active fish than the lean summer months, and brown trout generally move toward spawning areas in autumn. Browns on the move tend to be territorial and aggressive, but they are also easy to disturb, so keep a low profile and give spawning fish room. Check Missouri regulations before keeping any trout, since special rules often apply to browns and to the upper lake.
