Taneycomo trout fishing picks up with fall brown run

Lilleys Landing reports on its October 1 update that trout fishing on Lake Taneycomo has improved over the last month, with good numbers of rainbows through the upper lake, a clear change from the summer months. The shop also says its big trout are still showing up in good numbers, and that brown trout are making their appearance in the upper lake for the fall spawning run. Their earlier reports describe aggressive fish that hit hard with no pecking around.

What's next

Expect the upper lake to stay the focus while the brown trout run builds. Fall fish are often more willing to move for a fly or lure, so plan around the stretches where Lilleys Landing has been seeing trophy rainbows and arriving browns.

Generation schedules shape the day on Taneycomo. Lilleys Landing noted earlier in the season that dam operators ran minimum flow through the morning and ramped up in the afternoon and evening. If that pattern holds, the lighter-flow morning hours give the easiest wading and drifting. Check the current generation schedule before you commit to a spot.

For rigging, Lilleys Landing has had success drifting a straight line with a weight on the bottom and a drop shot loop about 18 inches up, with fluorocarbon tippet. Their guides have also done well in the afternoons with the Provo rig. Both are worth carrying as the water cools.

With the moon at First Quarter, expect the bite to hold through the daylight hours and stay steady rather than concentrated in one short window. Early morning and late afternoon are still the best times to plan around.

Context

Late October is typically a strong period for cold-tailwater trout fisheries like Taneycomo. Summer low-oxygen stress eases as the water cools, fish spread out and feed more freely, and the fall brown trout movement adds a second target. This improvement looks on schedule for the season, and shops in this region often call fall the best stretch of the year before winter flows set in. Check state regulations before keeping any fish, since trophy and brown trout rules often differ from the general limits.
