Best Deep Diving Crankbaits for Bass 2024: 15-20 Foot Range Reviewed
Deep diving crankbaits reach bass that most anglers can't get to. These long-bill, heavily-weighted plugs dive 15-20+ feet on long casts, deflecting off rocks and logs at depth and triggering reaction strikes from bass holding on deep structure. They're a specialized tool but one that consistently produces in summer when bass have moved deep.

Strike King Series 6XD
Consistently one of the top tournament producers for deep ledge bass. Tight wobble, true-running out of the package, and hits 20+ feet on a long cast with 12 lb fluorocarbon. Available in a wide range of colors. The benchmark deep diver.Replace the factory hooks with Gamakatsu or VMC trebles in the same size โ hook quality is the only weakness of this otherwise excellent lure.
Rapala DT-16
Rapala's Dives-To series cranks to specified depths. The DT-16 consistently reaches 16 feet on standard 12 lb fluorocarbon and 20+ feet on longer casts with lighter line. Premium balsa wood construction gives exceptional action.Balsa crankbaits produce more natural action than plastic, but they're fragile. The DT-16 is worth protecting โ use with slightly heavier leader to prevent rock hits from splitting the lip.
Norman DD22
Budget deep diver that consistently reaches 18-22 feet. Wide wobble, good rattle, and available in classic bass colors. The best value deep-diving crankbait โ proven for decades on southern ledge fishing. An old-school classic. The Norman DD22 doesn't get the press it deserves for CT ledge fishing. Buy a few to lose on structure before committing to expensive alternatives.

Deep Diving Crankbait Guide
Understanding depth ratings: Manufacturer depth ratings assume a specific scenario โ usually a 7-foot rod, light line (10-12 lb fluorocarbon), and a long cast (60+ feet). Shorter casts, heavier line, or shorter rods reduce actual depth reached.
Getting maximum depth: - Use the thinnest diameter line that's practical (10-12 lb fluorocarbon) - Make the longest cast possible โ more line out = more depth - Keep the rod tip low (parallel to water or even dipping) during retrieve - Use a fast retrieve initially to quickly dive to maximum depth, then slow to maintain it
Fluorocarbon vs. monofilament: Fluorocarbon sinks, which helps deep divers reach maximum depth. Monofilament floats slightly, reducing max depth by 10-15%. Always use fluorocarbon for deep crankbait applications.
Bill angle: A steep, angled bill produces a tight wobble and reaches greater depth. A square bill produces a wider wobble and shallower depth. The long, angled bills on deep divers like the 6XD and DT-16 are engineered specifically for depth.
Structure deflection: The most productive deep cranking technique is deflecting the lure off rocks, logs, and ledge edges. The change in direction after contact triggers reaction strikes. Don't avoid structure โ seek it.
Hook replacement: Replace factory hooks on all budget deep divers with quality aftermarket hooks. A missed strike on a fish that followed 25 feet is more frustrating than spending $3 on better hooks.
