Best Conventional Reels for Striped Bass 2024: Levelwind and Star Drag Options

October 6, 202410 min read
Quick verdict: The Penn Squall Levelwind is the best value conventional reel for striper boat fishing. The Daiwa Sealine is more refined. For surf casting, the Penn Spinfisher VI (conventional) or the Daiwa Saltist Levelwind are the proven CT shoreline tools.

Conventional (baitcasting/revolving spool) reels have different strengths than spinning reels for striper fishing โ€” better line capacity, better handling of heavy braid, and superior leverage for fighting large fish deep. Many CT boat anglers use conventional reels for chunking, jigging, and live-lining. Here's what works.

Penn Squall Levelwind 30LD

Full metal body, levelwind line guide for even distribution, and Penn's HT-100 drag washers. One of the best-value conventional reels for CT striper boat fishing. Handles 40-50 lb braid with plenty of capacity for long striper runs.
Approx. $89
Pros
โœ“Levelwind for even line lay
โœ“Full metal body
โœ“HT-100 carbon fiber drag
โœ“300+ yards of 40 lb braid capacity
โœ“Penn reliability
Cons
โœ—Heavier than equivalent spinning reels
โœ—Levelwind creates slight line friction at extreme angles
โœ—Not ideal for precision casting

The 30LD size is ideal for most CT inshore striper applications. Use with 40-50 lb braid and a 40 lb fluorocarbon leader for chunking.

Daiwa Sealine SL-B Levelwind

Smooth drag, lightweight aluminum frame, and better retrieve feel than the Penn Squall. The Sealine is a more refined conventional reel โ€” less heavy metal, better ergonomics. Popular with CT and RI party boat anglers.
Approx. $129
Pros
โœ“Lighter than Penn equivalents
โœ“Smooth, progressive drag
โœ“Good retrieve ergonomics
โœ“Compact for its capacity
โœ“Solid corrosion resistance
Cons
โœ—More expensive than Penn Squall
โœ—Less bomb-proof than full metal Penn construction
โœ—Drag range slightly less than Penn HT-100

Available in multiple retrieve ratios. The standard ratio (3.8:1) is most common for bottom fishing and chunking; faster ratios for jigging.

Shimano Tekota 500LC

Shimano's entry into the conventional levelwind category. LC stands for Line Counter โ€” built-in line counter shows exactly how much line is out. Extremely useful for trolling and precision depth control. Premium price but unique capability.
Approx. $169
Pros
โœ“Built-in line counter
โœ“Excellent Shimano drag smoothness
โœ“DuraStone drive gear
โœ“Good capacity for its size
โœ“Line counter invaluable for trolling
Cons
โœ—Expensive
โœ—Line counter feature is only useful for specific applications
โœ—Not as powerful drag as Penn equivalents

If you troll for stripers or need precise depth control (umbrella rigs, deep jigging), the line counter is a game-changer. For pure chunking or jigging without depth precision, standard levelwind is fine.

Buying Guide

Conventional Reel Buying Guide for Striper Fishing

Conventional vs. spinning: Conventional reels have a revolving spool vs. fixed spool in spinning. Advantages of conventional: higher line capacity for same size, better leverage with heavier loads, more precise line control during descent. Disadvantages: steeper learning curve, harder to cast without practice.

Levelwind vs. no levelwind: Levelwind reels have a guide that automatically distributes line evenly on the spool. This prevents line tangles and pressure points. Strongly recommended for anglers new to conventional reels. Experienced anglers sometimes prefer non-levelwind for faster retrieve and lighter weight.

Star drag vs. lever drag: Star drag reels use a star-shaped wheel to set drag pressure (most common for inshore). Lever drag reels have a lever with preset positions (strike, full, and free spool) โ€” preferred by offshore and big-game anglers. For CT striper fishing, star drag is fine.

Retrieve ratio: Lower gear ratio (3.5-4:1) = more torque for fighting large fish or pumping heavy jigs up from depth. Higher ratio (6:1+) = faster retrieve for jigging. For chunking: low ratio. For jigging: high ratio.

Line capacity: 40 lb braid is the standard for CT striper fishing. Ensure the reel holds at least 250 yards of 40 lb braid โ€” big stripers run far.

Drag system quality: Carbon fiber drag washers (Shimano, Penn HT-100) are smooth and heat-resistant. Felt drag washers can seize. For large fish, smooth drag startup is critical.
