Best Soft Plastic Lures for Bass Fishing (2024)

April 26, 202410 min read
Quick verdict: Yamamoto Senko worms and Strike King Rage Craw are the two soft plastics every CT bass angler should always have. From there, add a swimbait and a creature bait.

Soft plastic lures catch bass everywhere, in all seasons, in every water clarity condition. They're the most versatile category of bass fishing lure and the most forgiving — a beginner can fish a Senko under a bobber and catch fish, while a tournament professional uses the same bait with nuanced technique to win championships. We've fished these across Connecticut's lakes, ponds, and rivers to find out what consistently produces.

Yamamoto Senko 5-inch

The most versatile bass lure ever made
Approx. $8.99 per pack
Pros
Works on virtually any rig
Irresistible falling action without any rod movement
Catches fish in all conditions and seasons
Multiple sizes and dozens of colors
Works for both largemouth and smallmouth
Cons
Expensive per bait — bass can tear them quickly
Slow sink rate isn't ideal for deep water
Soft plastic tears after a few fish

The Senko is the most copied soft plastic in history because nothing quite replicates the original's fall action. The salt content makes it sink slowly with a horizontal, side-to-side shimmy that drives bass insane. The most common rig: weightless wacky rig (hook through the middle of the bait), cast near structure, and let it fall on slack line. Do nothing. The Senko does all the work. In clear water, this rig is devastating from ice-out through November in CT. Green pumpkin and watermelon red are essential colors.

Strike King Rage Craw 4-inch

Best crayfish imitation for bass
Approx. $6.99 per pack
Pros
Action-packed claws trigger reaction strikes
Excellent as a jig trailer
Works on Texas rig, Carolina rig, and drop shot
Durable compared to other craw-style baits
Multiple proven colors
Cons
Claws can tear on heavy cover
Less effective on a straight retrieve than finesse options
Can be hard to keep on the hook in heavy structure

Crayfish are the primary forage for bass in most CT lakes and rivers, and the Rage Craw is one of the best imitations available. The oversized, ribbed claws generate enormous water displacement and action even on a slow drag. Primary application: as a trailer on a swim jig or flipping jig. Secondary: Texas rigged with a 1/4–3/8 oz bullet weight for dragging along rocky bottom. Green pumpkin/chartreuse, black/blue, and brown/orange are CT-proven colors depending on water clarity and season.

Keitech Swing Impact FAT 3.8-inch

Best swimbait for CT largemouth and smallmouth
Approx. $11.99 per pack
Pros
Exceptional tail action on the fall and retrieve
Extremely durable for a soft swimbait
Works at any retrieve speed
Effective for both largemouth and smallmouth
Shad and bluegill colors excellent in CT waters
Cons
More expensive than domestic brands
Tail can tear on hard hooksets
Less bulk than some competing swimbaits

Keitech's Swing Impact FAT is the swimbait that tournament anglers reach for when they need a finesse swimbait that produces. The paddle tail generates a wide, thumping action even at very slow retrieve speeds — useful when fish aren't aggressive. Rig it on a 3/8 oz swimbait head for most applications. In CT, shad/silver and bluegill colors are most effective. The swimbait shines along riprap, dock pilings, and points — anywhere bass are feeding on small baitfish rather than bottom-dwelling prey.

Buying Guide

**Soft Plastic Rig Guide**

**Texas Rig (most versatile)** A bullet weight slides freely on the main line above a wide-gap hook. The bait is rigged weedless (hook point buried in the plastic). Can be fished anywhere — heavy grass, wood, rock — without constantly snagging. Vary the weight from 1/8 oz (finesse, clear water) to 1/2 oz (deep water, heavy cover, wind). The workhorse of bass fishing.

**Wacky Rig** Hook inserted through the middle of a stick bait (Senko). No weight on the bait itself. Cast near structure and let the bait sink on slack line — both ends wiggle on the fall. Devastatingly effective in clear water on pressured fish. Add a small nail weight to one end of the Senko to make it fall at an angle (Neko rig variation).

**Carolina Rig** Heavy bullet weight (3/4–1 oz) on the main line, above a swivel. Long (18–36 inch) fluorocarbon leader to the hook. Drag the heavy weight along the bottom and the bait floats, hops, and glides behind it. Excellent for covering large areas of flat or gently sloping bottom.

**Drop Shot** Hook tied 10–18 inches above a drop shot weight on the tag end of the line. The bait suspends horizontally off the bottom at a fixed depth. Shake the rod tip to make the bait vibrate. Excellent in clear water for finesse fishing and for suspended fish.

**Color Selection by Condition** Clear water: Natural colors (green pumpkin, watermelon, natural shad, translucent colors) Stained water: Chartreuse, black/blue, red Dark/muddy water: Black, dark blue, bold contrasts with chartreuse Overcast days: Darker, more visible colors Sunny days: Natural, subtle colors
