Best Striper Surface Plugs 2024: Tested for the CT Coast
There's no fishing experience quite like a striper blitz on the surface โ fish slashing through bunker, water exploding in every direction, and your plug riding right in the middle of it. The right surface plug in that situation is magic. The wrong one costs you fish. Here are the plugs shore anglers on the CT coast actually rely on.

Super Strike Zig-Zag Popper
The best all-around surface plug for CT shore stripersThe Zig-Zag is the standard by which other striper surface plugs are judged. The slender profile in bunker or mullet colors matches the primary forage of CT stripers, and the slow, wide walk-the-dog action is particularly effective in the fall when fish are keying on large bait. Made in Little Compton, RI by one of the few remaining domestic plug builders. Available in 2.5 oz and 3 oz โ go 3 oz for casting distance in wind. Buy it at any CT bait shop.
Danny Swimmer (Gibbs Lures)
The undisputed night fishing plug for the CT coastThe Danny Swimmer is a different tool than a popper โ it's a lazy, surface-swimming plug best fished on a slow, steady retrieve in calm conditions, often after dark. CT shore fishermen use them along sandy beaches on outgoing tides, especially in October when big cows are prowling. If you've never fished a Danny on a still night with full moon in the fall, you're missing one of the great striper fishing experiences on the CT coast. The Gibbs version is the most widely available; older collectors prize wooden originals.
Heddon Super Spook (Saltwater)
Best value surface plug for bluefish and mixed striper/blue situationsThe saltwater Super Spook in bone or chrome/blue is a staple of CT shore anglers who encounter mixed bags of bluefish and stripers. Bluefish destroy most plugs quickly; the Heddon construction holds up reasonably well and the cost is low enough that losing a few to the rocks doesn't sting. Upgrade the trebles to Owner ST-41 hooks for better hookup ratios. Effective in the morning blitz situations that happen regularly in Long Island Sound from July through October.
Buying Guide
Surface Plug Buying Guide for CT Stripers
The most important consideration when buying striper surface plugs is matching the plug size to the bait being present. During bunker blitzes in the fall, you need a 3 oz plug at minimum โ a small popper will get ignored. When stripers are working small sand eels or silversides early in the season, a 1.5โ2 oz slim profile plug gets far more strikes.
Color recommendations for Long Island Sound: Bunker (silver/dark back) is the most versatile color year-round because menhaden are the primary forage. White and bone work in dawn/dusk conditions. Natural mullet patterns are excellent in the fall. Avoid chartreuse and bright colors unless blues are the primary target.
Hook selection matters. The stock trebles on most surface plugs are mediocre. Upgrading to Owner ST-41BC or Mustad KVD Elite trebles improves hookup ratios noticeably. When purchasing, note hook sizes so you can order replacements before the season.
Weight matters for shore fishing. Plugs under 2 oz are difficult to cast into a headwind from the surf. For general CT shore use, focus on 2โ3 oz plugs. The extra weight isn't just casting distance โ heavier plugs cut through light chop better and maintain more consistent action in rougher conditions.
