**Putting it together**
Line to leader: spool the 30 lb Power Pro straight onto the reel, then run a 24 to 36 inch section of 20 lb Red Label ahead of it. The FG or double uni knot both test near full strength; learn one of them well rather than both badly.
Rod choice: the St. Croix is the buy-once option, the Ugly Stik is the learn-on-it option. Both fish the same water. The honest difference is sensitivity and weight, not fish-catching ability.
Which plug when: popper at dawn and dusk or any time fish are showing on top, metal when fish are breaking at distance or the wind is up. That two-lure spread covers most surf sessions; add from there based on what your local water eats.
