Red light is important: Fish are less sensitive to red light wavelengths than white light, and your eyes maintain night adaptation under red light. Any headlamp intended for night fishing should have a red LED mode. This single feature justifies choosing a slightly more expensive headlamp over a cheaper model without it.
Lumens vs. real-world use: Marketing lumens are measured at peak output. A 1000-lumen headlamp that dims to 100 lumens after 5 minutes isn't useful. For fishing, 100–300 lumens on a steady output is more useful than brief peak brightness. Look at the running time at medium brightness, not maximum.
