Best Kayak Paddles for Fishing (2024)
Your kayak paddle is the most-used piece of equipment on every fishing trip โ you start paddling before you cast the first lure and paddle home after the last one. A poorly designed paddle wastes energy, creates fatigue, and interferes with fishing. A well-designed fishing kayak paddle includes specific features that casual paddles overlook. We've evaluated these on CT's lakes and coastline.

Bending Branches Angler Pro
Best fishing-specific kayak paddleBending Branches designs paddles specifically for kayak fishing applications and the Angler Pro's thoughtful features reflect this focus. The hook retriever on the blade catches line from snags without requiring you to reach into the water or risk capsizing. The ruler markings eliminate the need to fumble for a measuring device when a fish needs to be quickly checked against legal minimums. The drip rings keep your lap drier during paddle strokes โ minor but appreciated on a full day. A well-conceived fishing paddle.
Werner Camano 220cm Fiberglass
Best paddle for efficiency and paddle performanceWerner paddles are the gold standard in sea kayaking and touring โ their blade shapes and shaft designs reduce fatigue over long distances. If you cover significant distances to reach fishing spots (CT coastal kayak fishing, large lake crossings), the efficiency advantage of a Werner Camano becomes noticeable over a full day. No fishing-specific features but the best pure-paddle performance in this price range.
Carlisle Magic Mystic
Best budget kayak fishing paddleThe Carlisle Magic Mystic is the standard 'good enough' budget paddle that comes with many entry-level kayak packages. If your kayak purchase included a paddle and it's a Carlisle, it's functional. If you're equipping a new fishing kayak on a tight budget, the Magic Mystic handles the job. The weight and efficiency penalty versus more expensive options is real over a 6-hour fishing day, but for occasional anglers or anyone prioritizing budget, it's completely adequate.
Buying Guide
**Kayak Paddle Selection Guide**
**Paddle Length** Paddle length depends on your kayak width and your height. The correct formula: - Narrow kayak (under 28 inches wide): 210โ220cm - Medium kayak (28โ32 inches): 220โ230cm - Wide fishing kayak (32+ inches): 230โ250cm
Most sit-on-top fishing kayaks fall in the 32โ36 inch width range and require 230โ250cm paddles.
**High Angle vs. Low Angle** High angle paddling: More vertical stroke, faster, better for moving water. Paddle blade shape is shorter and wider. Low angle paddling: More horizontal stroke, efficient for long flat-water distances. Blade is longer and narrower. For fishing kayaks: Low angle is more common โ you're covering distances between spots, not racing. A low-angle blade also stays lower, reducing interference with fishing activities.
**Shaft Material** Aluminum: Heavy, inexpensive, conducts cold. Acceptable for casual use. Fiberglass: Good balance of weight, stiffness, and price. Ideal for most fishing applications. Carbon fiber: Lightest, stiffest, most expensive. Worthwhile if you paddle 30+ days per year.
**Feathering** Feathering is the angle between the two paddle blades. Unfeathered (0ยฐ): Both blades in the same plane. Most intuitive. Feathered (45โ60ยฐ): One blade turned relative to the other to reduce wind resistance. Requires wrist rotation technique. For fishing: Unfeathered or low feathering (15โ30ยฐ) is most practical โ less wrist fatigue and simpler technique.
