August 28, 20248 min read
Quick verdict: The Berkley Fish Grip is the most ergonomic lip gripper available. The Rapala Touch Screen Fish Scale delivers the best accuracy in a digital scale. For budget anglers, the Joshs Fish Grip offers solid value.

A lip gripper and scale combination is standard equipment for anglers who practice catch-and-release and want accurate weight data. The right tools protect fish and produce trustworthy measurements. Here's what actually works versus what looks good on a shelf.

Berkley Fish Grip

Ergonomic trigger-release clamp that securely grips fish lips without piercing. Lightweight, corrosion-resistant stainless steel clamp head, and a compact design that clips to a vest or pack. Best ergonomic lip gripper on the market.
Approx. $19
Pros
โœ“Ergonomic trigger design
โœ“Stainless steel clamp head
โœ“Lightweight
โœ“Won't slip on wet surfaces
โœ“Can be attached to lanyard
Cons
โœ—Not a scale (weight measurement requires separate tool)
โœ—Small clamp size limits to medium-sized fish
โœ—Trigger can jam if debris enters the mechanism

The Berkley Fish Grip handles trout, bass, and most freshwater species to 5+ lbs. For large stripers, use a larger-capacity gripper or two-hand support.

Rapala Touch Screen Fish Scale

Digital touch-screen scale with memory function (stores up to 99 catches), tare function, and 50 lb capacity. Reads to 0.1 lb, more than adequate for most fishing. One of the most accurate budget digital scales available.
Approx. $26
Pros
โœ“Digital accuracy (0.1 lb resolution)
โœ“50 lb capacity
โœ“Memory for 99 catches
โœ“Waterproof construction
โœ“Tare function
Cons
โœ—Touch screen requires dry fingers (use towel first)
โœ—Battery life moderate
โœ—No built-in lip gripper

For tournament anglers and anyone who wants accurate weight data for records, the digital scale is essential. Analog spring scales degrade in accuracy quickly.

Piscifun Lip Grip with Scale

Combination lip gripper and digital scale in one unit โ€” measure weight and hang fish for photos without a separate tool. 110 lb capacity, stainless steel grip, and a digital display. Best value 2-in-1 tool for bass and inshore saltwater.
Approx. $22
Pros
โœ“Grip and scale combined
โœ“110 lb capacity
โœ“Stainless steel construction
โœ“Wrist lanyard included
โœ“Good value
Cons
โœ—Scale accuracy slightly less precise than dedicated scale
โœ—Heavier than a dedicated gripper
โœ—Display visibility poor in direct sunlight

The 2-in-1 design makes sense for kayak fishing and wading where you want minimal tools. The scale is accurate enough for most catch-documentation purposes.

Buying Guide

Fish Gripper and Scale Buying Guide

Why a lip gripper: When landing fish for release, a secure grip prevents fish from thrashing and injuring themselves or the angler. Proper grip with a tool reduces the amount of time the fish is out of water and stress during unhooking.

Grip types: - Clamp (Berkley style): Trigger-release clamp grips the lower jaw. Most common for freshwater. - Wide-jaw grip: Larger clamp for bigger saltwater fish (stripers, bluefish). Wider spread accommodates thicker jaws.

Lip gripping technique for catch-and-release: Hold fish vertically for weigh and photo only briefly. Then hold horizontal (with second hand supporting the body under the belly) for revival. Never hold a large fish vertically by the lip for extended periods โ€” can dislocate jaw.

Digital vs. analog scales: Digital scales are more accurate and maintain accuracy longer. Analog spring scales stretch and lose calibration. For any use beyond casual, digital is worth the marginal cost premium.

Weight capacity: 50 lb is adequate for most freshwater and inshore saltwater species. For offshore fish (large stripers, tuna), look for 100-110 lb capacity.

Waterproofing: Fishing scales and grippers get wet constantly. Look for waterproof ratings (IP67 or better) to ensure longevity in saltwater environments.

Lanyard: Any scale or gripper used near water should have a lanyard attachment. Dropped gear in moving water or off a boat is gone permanently.
