Best Worm Hooks for Bass 2024: Offset, EWG, and Straight Shank Compared

September 20, 20248 min read
Quick verdict: The Gamakatsu EWG Superline Hook is the best all-around worm hook. The Owner Mosquito Hook is the best wacky rig hook. For drop-shot, the Gamakatsu G-Finesse Drop Shot Hook delivers the best performance.

Hook selection for soft plastic fishing is one of the most underappreciated details in bass fishing. The hook determines hookup rate, how the bait falls, and how well it stays rigged through multiple strikes and fish. Here's what separates good hooks from great ones.

Buying Guide

Bass Worm Hook Buying Guide

Hook styles by application: - Offset (standard): Basic Texas rig and Carolina rig. Slight offset at bend allows weedless rigging while maintaining hookup rate. - EWG (Extra Wide Gap): Texas rig with thick baits (creature baits, craws). The wider gap accommodates bulkier plastics. - Straight shank: Wacky rig, drop-shot, and Ned rig. Straight shank keeps the plastic perpendicular. - Round bend: Drop-shot. The round bend allows the hook to hang correctly below the sinker.

Hook size guide for soft plastics: - 4-inch worm: 1/0-2/0 - 5-inch worm: 2/0-3/0 - 6-inch worm: 3/0-4/0 - 7+ inch worm or creature bait: 4/0-5/0

Sharpness matters: Quality hooks from Gamakatsu, Owner, Mustad UltraPoint, and VMC are chemically sharpened to a point that will stick to your fingernail on light pressure. Cheap hooks require much more force to drive home, resulting in missed strikes on subtle bass bites.

Carbon steel vs. stainless: Carbon steel hooks are sharper and stronger for their diameter. They may rust in saltwater (use stainless for salt). For freshwater bass hooks, carbon steel is preferred.

Weedguard considerations: Some worm hooks come with built-in monofilament weedguards for fishing heavy grass and brush. These slightly reduce hookup rate but allow fishing in cover that would result in constant snags with open hooks.
