Size selection: This is the most important decision. Match reel size to rod and target species. 1000–2500: Ultra-light, panfish, stream trout. 3000–4000: All-purpose freshwater, light saltwater, bass. 5000–6000: Surf fishing, heavy saltwater, large bait casting. Don't use a 4000 reel for panfish or a 2500 for surf casting — the mismatch kills performance.
Gear ratio: Most spinning reels come in 5.2:1 to 6.2:1 gear ratios. Higher ratios (6.0+ :1) retrieve line faster — good for fast presentations. Lower ratios (5.2:1) provide more torque — better for slow cranking large lures or fighting fish. For most applications, a standard 5.5–6.0 ratio is correct.
Drag quality: The drag is the most important system in a reel. It must apply pressure smoothly without surging. The carbon fiber drag washers in Penn and higher-end models smooth out better and last longer than felt. Test the drag before purchase if possible — run line through and pull: it should feel like smooth, consistent resistance.
