## Matching Rod Power to Your Trout Fishing
**Ultralight (UL):** 4–6 lb line, 1/32–3/16 oz lures. Best for: small streams, wild brook trout, stocked fish in shallow water, light spinners and small inline spinners. The most fun you can have with a trout on.
**Light (L):** 4–8 lb line, 1/16–1/4 oz lures. Best for: all-around river trout fishing, stocked lakes and ponds, inline spinners up to 1/4 oz, small spoons.
**Medium-Light (ML):** 6–10 lb line, 1/8–3/8 oz. Best for: larger rivers, heavier spinners, light jig fishing, crossover to small bass and panfish.
## Rod Length
- **5'–6':** Small brushy streams, tight cover — easier to maneuver - **6'–7':** Open rivers and lakes — better casting distance and fish control - **7'–8':** Large rivers, longer casts needed, crossover to light bass applications
## Line Pairing
Match the rod's line rating. Ultralight rods loaded with heavy line lose all their action and sensitivity advantage. Use 4–6 lb mono or 4–6 lb PE braided with a fluorocarbon leader on ultralight rods.
