Most CT striper anglers don't need this much reel — a 5000–6000 size handles the vast majority of situations. But for dedicated surf anglers targeting trophy fish from CT's outer beaches in fall, this is what to look at.

**Size guide for CT surf fishing:** - 4000–5000 size: Jigging for fluke and sea bass from a boat; light surf work with smaller lures - 5000–6000 size: Standard CT striper surf fishing size — handles 30 lb braid, most lure weights, and most surf conditions - 8000–10000 size: Distance casting large plugs, big-surf situations, trophy striper targeting in fall
**Rinsing and maintenance:** After every saltwater use: rinse the reel with fresh water (not high-pressure — use a gentle hose or bucket). Open the bail and run water through the line roller area. Apply a few drops of oil to the line roller and handle knobs every few trips. At the end of the season, have a quality reel serviced or at minimum open and grease the drag washers yourself. Saltwater destroys unmaintained reels.
**Braid for surf fishing:** 30 lb braid (0.28–0.30mm diameter) is the standard on a 5000–6000 surf reel. Thin enough to cast well, strong enough for any fish you'll encounter in the Sound. Use a 20–30 lb fluorocarbon shock leader (15–20 feet) attached to the braid to absorb shock and handle the abrasion at the surf zone.
